Late Summer in Spain
Discover the Charm of September and October in Moraira
There’s something rather special about late summer in Spain.
While the first signs of autumn are appearing across the UK and Northern Europe, mornings in Moraira still often begin with sunshine streaming through the windows. The Mediterranean glistens in the distance, the terrace doors are wide open and there’s absolutely no need to rush.
September and October have a charm all of their own. The busiest summer holiday weeks are behind us, yet the Mediterranean way of life carries on. People are still enjoying long lunches on sunny terraces, swimming in the sea and making the most of those lovely evenings outdoors.
Having lived in Moraira for many years, we’ve come to appreciate this time of year enormously. And it’s not simply because of the pleasant temperatures. It’s the atmosphere, the relaxed pace of life and those little everyday pleasures that make the Costa Blanca so enjoyable.
Come along with us and discover what a perfect late summer day in Moraira might look like.
A Slow Morning with Coffee in the Sunshine
One of the nicest things about spending late summer in Spain is being able to start your day outdoors.
No alarm clock. No particular plans. Just a fresh cup of coffee, perhaps a few pastries from the local bakery and a comfortable chair on the terrace of your holiday villa. Maybe you’ll take an early dip in your private swimming pool, or simply sit back and enjoy the Mediterranean garden coming to life in the morning sunshine. And that’s the beauty of it. You don’t have to do anything.
Whether your villa overlooks the sea, the surrounding hills or a peaceful garden, there’s something wonderfully relaxing about taking your time. After all, isn’t that what a holiday should be about?
Exploring Moraira and Its Beautiful Beaches
By late morning, you might feel like heading into Moraira.
The town retains its welcoming atmosphere throughout September and October. Shops, cafés and restaurants are still open, but the pace is generally a little more relaxed than during the height of summer. Take a leisurely stroll through the town centre, enjoy another coffee on a sunny terrace or wander down towards the marina to watch the boats gently bobbing in the water. One of our favourite places is El Portet, a beautiful sheltered bay just outside the centre of Moraira. With its clear turquoise water, sandy beach and green hillsides, it’s easy to see why this little bay is so popular. And during late summer, it’s often easier to find a peaceful spot to sit and enjoy the view. Another lovely option is Playa de l’Ampolla, Moraira’s main sandy beach, conveniently located beside the town centre.

A Long Lunch by the Sea | Because You’re on Holiday!
In Spain, lunch is much more than a quick bite to eat.
It’s a moment to slow down, spend time together and enjoy good food. And during late summer, there’s something particularly lovely about sitting outside with a view of the Mediterranean. Find a welcoming restaurant, order something delicious and settle in for a leisurely afternoon. Fresh fish, a traditional Spanish rice dish, a few tapas to share and perhaps a chilled glass of local wine. There’s no hurry to leave the table.
Moraira has an excellent selection of restaurants, and many remain open throughout September and October. The atmosphere is lively without the same level of summer holiday bustle.
Our advice? Don’t fill every day with activities. Sometimes a long lunch overlooking the sea turns out to be one of the highlights of your holiday.

Late Summer Is the Perfect Time to Explore the Costa Blanca
Of course, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with spending every day beside your swimming pool. But September and October are also wonderful months for discovering more of the Costa Blanca. With slightly milder temperatures, walking, cycling and exploring the beautiful countryside become particularly appealing.
One of our favourite local walks is the Paseo Ecológico along the Benissa Costa. This scenic coastal path takes you past rocky coves, Mediterranean vegetation and viewpoints with spectacular sea views. You’ll probably find yourself stopping regularly, simply to admire the scenery.

If you prefer exploring charming towns, nearby Jávea and Altea are both well worth visiting. Wander through historic streets, enjoy a coffee in a traditional square or discover a restaurant you’ve never tried before. And for wine lovers, the countryside around Moraira offers another delightful experience.
The area around Teulada has a long tradition of growing Moscatel grapes, and several local wineries offer tastings and opportunities to discover the region’s wines. A leisurely wine tasting followed by lunch in the countryside makes a wonderful alternative to another afternoon at the beach.

And Then Come Those Lovely Mediterranean Evenings…
After a day exploring, it’s time to return to your holiday villa. Perhaps there’s still time for a swim, a little reading on the terrace or a relaxed drink while the evening sunshine settles over the garden.
You might decide to light the barbecue and enjoy dinner outside, with nothing more pressing to think about than what to eat tomorrow. September evenings are often pleasantly warm, while in October you might appreciate a light jumper as the sun goes down.
Either way, there’s something special about ending the day outdoors. A beautifully set table, good company and the freedom to take your time. No busy schedule. No rushing from one place to another. Just enjoying life!
