Looking for a different kind of day trip from Moraira? Hidden in the mountains near Busot, just outside Alicante, are the spectacular Canelobre Caves (Cuevas del Canelobre). With impressive stalactites, stalagmites and a vast underground chamber reaching 70 metres in height, these caves are one of the Costa Blanca’s most remarkable natural attractions.
We’ve visited the caves ourselves and were particularly impressed by the enormous underground space and extraordinary rock formations. A fascinating excursion, even on a hot summer’s day.
What Makes the Canelobre Caves So Special?
The Canelobre Caves are situated approximately 700 metres above sea level in the Cabeçó d’Or mountain range. A 45-metre entrance tunnel leads into an enormous underground chamber, where water and limestone have created spectacular natural formations over thousands of years. One of the highlights is El Canelobre, a stalagmite resembling a large candlestick. Another impressive formation is La Sagrada Familia, featuring a column over 25 metres high. The limestone surrounding the caves dates back approximately 145 million years to the Jurassic period.
Exploring the Caves on a Guided Tour
The Canelobre Caves can be visited on a guided tour lasting approximately 45 minutes. Stairways and viewing platforms allow you to admire the enormous chamber from different heights. Carefully positioned lighting highlights the fascinating shapes and formations within the rock.
During the tour, you’ll also discover more about the caves’ unusual history. During the Spanish Civil War, the caves were used as a workshop for repairing aircraft engines. The present entrance tunnel was constructed during this period.
Good to know: The temperature inside remains around 17–18°C throughout the year. We recommend bringing a light jacket and wearing comfortable shoes with a good grip.

The Canelobre Caves are open for most of the year, with seasonal opening hours.

- September to June: Closed on Mondays. Tuesday to Friday from 10.30 am to 4.50 pm; weekends and public holidays until 5.50 pm.
- July and August: Open daily from 10.30 am to 7.30 pm.
- Special opening hours may apply during Easter, public holidays and other events.

Getting to the Canelobre Caves from Moraira
The caves are located near the village of Busot, north of Alicante, approximately an hour and a quarter’s drive from Moraira, depending on traffic. The final section follows a winding mountain road, with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. Parking is available near the cave entrance, although spaces can be limited during busy periods.

As you’re already travelling inland from Moraira, we recommend spending some time exploring the nearby village of Busot. Take a stroll through its historic streets, stop for a coffee or visit the Ethnic Music Museum, which is included in your cave admission ticket.
