Moscatel grape from the bodega of Moraira
Perhaps you have seen the green or sometimes dry fields several times and wondered what is growing there. This green strip begins behind the (free) public parking lot, which can be seen from both sides by the roads that pass it. This green strip is protected and overgrown with vines of the muscatel grape. In the summer months they are mostly green and overgrown and after picking they become bare and you only see a few stems and it seems that no life ever returns…But nothing could be further from the truth!
We know mainly the sultana grapes, however, the taste of the muscatel grape is much more intense and sweeter. The moscatel grapes are also much larger than the sultana grape. The moscatel grape is perfect for making delicious dessert wines, the mistela. In Teulada there is a cooperative, the San Vicente Ferrer, which was founded in 1940. They have been making this special alcoholic digestif for years and has received worldwide recognition for its refined taste. It is well worth a visit and a bottle of mistela makes an ideal gift/memory for those who want to take home something unique from Moraira/Teulada.

Another unique drink is the wine ¨M de Alejandría¨. This bodega is also located in Teulada. It is made from the same (muscatel) grape, but it undergoes a different production process. By applying innovative techniques, a very special flavor palette has been created here. Many praise the special taste, and even internationally it receives much esteem. Regularly there are special tours and tastings at the bodega.
Bodega Montesanco is the newest addition to the immediate area. They already had a bodega in Requeña (Valencia), but they have now also opened a bodega in Teulada. At the bodega in Teulada, tours and tastings can be booked which are organized biweekly. There is even a tour of their vineyard ánd they have special days with a tasting and live music, overlooking the vineyards…Very recently they have organized some exclusive “wine & dine” events. If you happen to be in the area, make a reservation for such a unique experience.
The family name ´Mendoza´ probably sounds familiar. There is an Enrique Mendoza bodega in Alfas de Pi and a Pepe Mendoza bodega in Lliber. We have already described the bodega of Enrique Mendoza here.
The bodega of Pepe Mendoza, Casa Agrícola is smaller but no less interesting. The tasting, which is organized almost daily, includes a tour of the vineyards. Then the best wines can be tasted with a matching snack. Buying a few bottles afterwards to enjoy again at home is a plus. Given its popularity, it is advisable to book in advance with them.
