Want to stretch your legs but have already seen the routes around Moraira and Benissa? Then it is recommended to go a little further to explore a completely different area.

Reservoir

The area around Relleu is then really worthwhile. Since it is not around the corner, it is necessary to drive the first part by car. Relleu is located a bit inland, towards Alicante. From Moraira it is about an hour’s drive, half of which is freeway and the other half winding roads along various villages.

At the height of Villajoyosa you go inland. Then you drive along the reservoir “Amadorio”, which you will find on your left. This reservoir has the characteristic of being the closest of all reservoirs (there are about 350 in all of Spain) to the sea, only 4.2 kilometers away. Here you can already admire the beautiful colors of the water, as well as the outline of the town of Villajoyosa and in the distance you can even see the sea. In this area you have the chance to spot turtles, eagles, kestrels or even foxes! So this area is definitely worth a (photo) break!

Then about half an hour further inland, on winding roads, and then you arrive at Relleu. Meanwhile, you drive through sleepy villages and wonder where the locals get their bread and groceries, it is so quiet…

Then you arrive at Relleu, where there used to be (17th century) also a reservoir, the reservoir of Relleu. This one is now completely dry, but you can still see the twists and depths of the lake it once was. In this rugged nature reserve there are a number of routes, the shortest of which is the route to the glass plateau where you look meters into the depths.

This route is only 1400 meters and very passable. So you first walk on a kind of sandy path. The terrain gets a little rougher and you walk a little uphill. Suddenly there is a little house where, besides a small snack/drink, you also have to buy an entrance ticket of about € 3,50 per person to be allowed to walk on. Through this small contribution they ensure that everything is maintained and everyone can enjoy the surroundings to the fullest. Also, in busy times they regulate the flow because only x number of people at a time can be allowed on the decks and plateau.

Update December 2024: the route has recently been extended by 20 metres and an additional glass viewpoint has been added to the route.

Hopefully no fear of heights

Next, you mainly walk on wooden decks placed right next to the mountain side. Thus, you already immediately experience the unique location. The route ends up at a glass plateau after several twists and turns. From this plateau there is a beautiful vista ahead where you look between the mountains and see the different depths and colors. Looking down from this plateau you see how high you actually are, quite bizarre to experience. Then it is the same way back to the cottage, parking lot and car.

A sportier challenge is to walk the entire route, a stretch of about 10 kilometers. Then you go in a complete circular arc around the dry reservoir and grab a small part of the village center. The route also goes partly along the old bridle path and you will see sights such as a lime kiln, old irrigation ponds, dams and ditches. In short, a beautiful area that is definitely worth a visit!
