The history of Teulada-Moraira

The municipality of Teulada-Moraira was founded in 1386, shortly after the Christians reconquered the area from the Moors. For centuries it was owned by noble families such as the Marquis of Ariza and the Duke of Gandía, before being transferred to the Spanish crown in the 19th century.

The Dominican preacher San Vicente Ferrer regularly visited Teulada in the early 15th century and later became its patron saint. Even today, many streets in the village are named after him.

Landmarks in Moraira and Teulada

Iglesia-Fortaleza de Santa Caterina (Teulada)

This impressive church-fortress once served both religious and defensive purposes. Construction began in 1562 under the supervision of Italian architect J.B. Antonelli, at a time when Berber pirate attacks were common along the coast. The building took nearly 40 years to complete and was finished largely by local townspeople.

Castillo de Moraira

The most iconic monument in Moraira Spain is the Castillo de Moraira, located directly at L’Ampolla beach. This 18th-century fortress was built to defend the coast against pirate attacks. Standing about 10 meters tall and semi-circular on the seaside, it features cannon slots on its roof. Above the northern entrance, a plaque still states the fortress was completed in 1742.
