The Remarkable Salt Giant of Moraira

If you’re taking a stroll past Moraira Castle, you can hardly miss it: an impressive bronze sculpture of a human figure, with the beautiful Mediterranean Sea in the background. This is El Gigante de Sal, also known as the Salt Giant of Moraira. The striking sculpture has stood beside the castle since March 2022 and regularly attracts the attention of visitors passing by.
But what’s the story behind this unusual piece of art? And what does it represent?

The Story Behind El Gigante de Sal

El Gigante de Sal was created by Spanish artists Joan Coderch and Javier Malavia, an internationally recognised sculpting duo based in Valencia. The sculpture represents the strength of humanity and our ability to recover after difficult times. Its message became particularly meaningful following the COVID-19 pandemic. For the artists, the Salt Giant symbolises resilience, hope and the courage to begin again.
When you look at the figure’s powerful pose, it’s easy to understand why the sculpture has such a strong emotional impact.

A Sculpture Inspired by Human Resilience

The sculpture’s story is closely connected to the idea of recovery after adversity. Its expressive pose also reflects the emotional qualities associated with Butoh, a Japanese form of dance that developed after the Second World War.
In September 2022, dancer Fred Herrera performed beside the sculpture in Moraira, bringing together dance, music and art in a celebration of hope and renewal. It’s a fascinating example of how a single sculpture can tell a story without using any words.

How Did the Salt Giant Come to Moraira?

Before arriving in Moraira, El Gigante de Sal was displayed in several European locations, including Munich, Toulouse and Capri. It also spent time at the marina in Valencia. The artists have a special connection with Moraira, where they began their collaboration and exhibited their work. On 12 March 2022, the sculpture was officially unveiled beside Moraira Castle. And in our opinion, the setting couldn’t be more beautiful. With the Mediterranean Sea behind it, the Salt Giant is an impressive sight.

Where Can You See El Gigante de Sal in Moraira?

You’ll find the sculpture on the seafront promenade beside Castillo de Moraira, just a short walk from the town centre. It’s located next to Playa de l’Ampolla, Moraira’s main sandy beach. The sculpture stands in a public area, so you can admire it and take photographs without paying an entrance fee. It’s a lovely place to stop during a walk along the seafront, especially with the castle and Mediterranean Sea providing such a beautiful backdrop.
You can easily combine your visit with a coffee in the town centre, a stroll towards the marina or an afternoon at one of the beautiful beaches in Moraira.
