In and around Moraira there are many different supermarkets. However, the famous names in England such as the Asda and Tesco are not found here. Well, there is a supermarket in Moraira center where they sell the products from the Iceland and Waitrose. I will get back on this topic.
Almost all major supermarkets in Spain are represented in Moraira and the surrounding area. You should think of the Mercadona, the Mas y Mas or, for example, the Open Cor. But also foreign super markets such as Lidl, Carrefour or Aldi have opened their doors here.
However, certainly people who have been to Moraira more often know the name Pepe la Sal. This is a fairly large supermarket which started in 1969. Because they keep renewing and renovating regularly, it looks like a very modern store. At the end of 2018, the store at San Jaime was completely overhauled and the logo changed, now there is even more customer experience. There are various branches around Moraira. However, because it is a local family business, you will not find it elsewhere in Spain.
Pepe la Sal
The Pepe la Sal supermarket is number one for us when it comes to daily shopping. The shops of the Pepe la Sal are spacious and the range is tailored to the many tourists who come here. Products such as De Ruijter sprinkles and flakes and Calvé Peanut butter can simply be purchased here. The meat department is very extensive. Delicious meat for the BBQ but also various hams and other meats. Are you more of the cheese, this is also present here to a large extent. The friendly and helpful staff is happy to help
Supermarket Mercadona
Supermarket Mercadona is a very popular supermarket especially among the Spaniards. This national chain is well-known among the Spanish population, but certainly also among foreigners. The Mercadona is best known for its fresh fish department. Every supermarket of this brand has a large fish department with a wide range. Every day fresh fish, shellfish and shellfish from the various ports come to the store. Because of this, fresh fish is always guaranteed here! In addition, the stores are light, spacious and in addition to the fresh fish there are also other interesting products. For example, Mercadona’s own brand “Hackendado”, these are very good quality products. Be sure to take a look at the beauty products. They have these specially produced. The ingredients are often the same as a jar of Lancôme, but at a very attractive price of € 5. In short, a great supermarket for daily or weekly shopping.
Supermarket Mas y Mas
The Mas y Mas is an odd man out. Where you can compare the Pepe la Sal and Mercadona with the Tesco and Sainbury´s, the Mas y Mas is a mix of an Aldi and Lidl. The store is spacious, has a large assortment and is competitively priced. On June 1, 2023, a super store will open on the Carretera Moraira – Calpe opposite the Pedros hardware store.
Supermarkets Lidl & Aldi
The Lidl and Aldi are just like we are used to in the UK. The range is not the same, but more grafted on the Spanish market. Nevertheless, both supermarkets have a wide range of products that we all need or like. The Aldi is currently building a new complex in Moraira. This is located on the Carretera Moraira – Teulada opposite the Paichi Garden Center
Supercor Exprés
Then the Supercor Exprés. This is a small supermarket in the center of Moraira with very long opening times. You can rightly call it an evening or night shop. This shop is open until 2 am in the summer months.
Overseas supermarkets
I started this text with the Iceland and Waitrose and would come back to that. Overseas supermarkets are located in the center of Moraira. This supermarket sells mainly English products. Many of these products are from Iceland and Waitrose. This supermarket is very popular with the English who live here permanently or spend the winter. Every week there is a truck with new cargo for this supermarket. If you cannot miss the typical English products from the Netherlands, this is your supermarket!
