Things to see in Dénia
The town of Dénia is about half an hour’s drive from Moraira. Most guides refer to it as a village because of the relatively low number of inhabitants (around forty thousand), but it looks more as a small town than a village. Despite the presence of dozens of hotels and apartment buildings and off course, the tourists, you cannot compare Denia with Benidorm. It has a good mix of Spanish atmosphere and tourism.
Dénia Castle
A major attraction of Dénia is the castle of Dénia, which rises above the town and therefore also offers a beautiful view of Dénia and the marina. The castle was built around the 11th / 12th century AC. In the nearby area you can also find older remains from Roman times. If you want to visit the castle you should study the opening times. These vary a lot and changes almost every month. The big difference is in the ´siesta´ hours. The siesta lasts longer in the summer months, due to the hot weather. In summertime they close later in the evening compared to the winter and spring seasons. Actually it all makes sense in a way. Our advice would be to visit the castle in the morning, if you were to visit during the summer months. It is quite a bit of climbing and hiking and on a hot summer day that does not feel like having fun. Whenever you visit the castle, don’t forget to also take a look in the Archaeological Museum which is located on the same premises.
Colorful streets
The old streets west and east of the castle are also nice. Cute houses in all kinds of colours are often in excellent condition and often a real delight to see. South of the castle entrance you will also find the attractive Plaza de la Constitución square with the stately town hall and “Iglesia de la Asunción”, a beautiful church in modern Baroque style. A little further to the south you will find the Marques de Campo street. This richly tree-filled street is filled with nice shops and a number of pleasant terraces.
Ice cream parlor
In the south-eastern part of this street is the Verdú ice cream parlor, where they prepare the ice themselves in the traditional way at the back of the store. The ice cream tastes great and you can taste that it is not factory ice cream. A nice treat for yourselves when you have done all the climbing.
Beaches of Dénia
Those who love the beach, love Dénia. Both to the west and to the east of the harbour are several beaches that are often long and fairly wide. There is enough choice for sun and beach lovers. You can also go snorkelling or diving along the coast of the eastern beach of Playa Punta Negra.
Marina of Dénia
Those who prefer a boat trip can do so from the central marina of Dénia. Ferries to the islands of Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca also depart from the port of Dénia. With the daily ferry services from Balearia company you can sail to party island Ibiza in about four hours.
Parties & festivities
Dénia is the city of festivals. The annual calendar is packed with all kinds of festivals that often have their origin in the Catholic faith. It already starts on January 5 with the procession of the Three Wise Men and ends on December 13 with an open-air fair “Pilgrimage to Saint Lucia’s Hermitage”. This is of course if you ignore New Year and Christmas celebrated almost all over the world.
Especially in the last ten days of June, various parties succeed each other. Fun for the tourists is “Bulls to the sea”, which is held in July on the grounds near the marina. In a temporary arena, a bull is released under great public interest to be lured to the sea by brave men and women. The goal is to get the bull into the water without getting injured nor wet.

Travel to Dénia by car
From Moraira you can drive to Dénia via two routes. Most navigation systems will partly send you over the A-7 motorway. This is slightly longer in kilometres, slightly more expensive due to the toll and certainly less beautiful than the public road. The nicer and shorter route is via the CV-734 and CV-736 along Jávea (Xábia) to Dénia.
The part between Javea and Dénia is a very curvy road which is not always appreciated by fellow passengers. Just after Javea you can make a trip to Cap Sant Antoni, a mountain along the coast that offers a beautiful view and where you will also find several routes for hikers. The travel time on both routes is about the same in theory, in practice the route on the highway will often be a few minutes faster.
