Who Was Ricardo Bofill?
Ricardo Bofill (1939–2022) was a celebrated Spanish architect born in Barcelona. He became internationally recognised for his imaginative designs combining geometric shapes, bold colours and Mediterranean influences. His architectural practice created several unusual residential complexes in Calpe, three of which remain particularly interesting today.
1. Xanadú | Calpe’s Cubist Castle
Built between 1966 and 1968, Xanadú was one of Bofill’s early experimental projects in Calpe. The building consists of interconnected cube-like structures arranged at different heights, with terraces, staircases and unusual curved rooflines. Its design resembles a modern castle, with the famous Peñón de Ifach providing inspiration for its distinctive shape. Even decades after its construction, Xanadú still looks remarkably unconventional.

2. La Muralla Roja | The Famous Red Wall
Without doubt, the best-known Ricardo Bofill building in Calpe is La Muralla Roja. Completed in 1972, this extraordinary residential complex has become internationally famous for its striking architecture and unusual colours. The design consists of a fascinating arrangement of staircases, passageways, courtyards and geometric shapes. Bright red and pink surfaces contrast with sections painted in different shades of blue and purple. Bofill drew inspiration from traditional North African kasbahs, with their narrow passages, high walls and interconnected spaces. The result looks almost like a colourful Mediterranean maze. La Muralla Roja is particularly popular with architecture enthusiasts and photographers.
Important: La Muralla Roja is a private residential complex. Visitors cannot freely enter the courtyards, staircases or terraces. You can admire the architecture from publicly accessible locations, but please respect the privacy of the residents.

3. El Anfiteatro | Inspired by a Greek Theatre
The third remarkable building is El Anfiteatro, constructed between 1983 and 1985. As its name suggests, the complex was inspired by the shape of a classical amphitheatre. It contains 27 residential properties, a communal swimming pool and several terraces.
The swimming pool forms the centre of the design, much like the stage of an ancient Greek theatre, while the surrounding apartments are arranged around it. Located on a cliff, the complex also offers impressive views towards the Mediterranean Sea and Peñón de Ifach.
It’s another fascinating example of how Bofill combined architecture with the natural landscape.
Where Can You See Ricardo Bofill’s Buildings in Calpe?
All three buildings are located in La Manzanera, a residential neighbourhood overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. You can explore parts of the surrounding area and admire the architecture from public roads and viewpoints. However, remember that these are private homes rather than museums or public attractions. Please don’t enter private property or disturb residents while taking photographs.
If you enjoy walking, Calpe also has a scenic route towards Cala Manzanera, passing close to the Bofill buildings.
