Architect Ricardo Bofill has designed various buildings in Calpe, each of which is unique. Next year, 2023, it will be 50 years since his most famous building, the Red Wall, was completed. Bofill’s masterpiece
The cubes of Calpe. This was Ricardo Bofill’s first masterpiece in Calpe and was completed in 1971. This Garden City consists of different levels and heights, connected by various stairs and ramps. The structure of this apartment complex resembles a castle and in terms of structure it is also very similar to the Peñon de Ifach. Each apartment consists of three cubes. These then consist of the living room, service room and bedrooms. Ricardo Bofill has also thought about which shapes to use in the design. The worst heat is avoided by using the internal terraces and the hyperbolic roofs ensure that there is maximum view.
The red wall of Calpe (Muralla Roja)
The red wall was the second building to his hand, this was completed in 1973. The building is painted in various shades of red and has all kinds of different heights. This makes it reminiscent of a mountain landscape. The intention was that the building would seamlessly fit in with the mountain landscape of the Calpe area. In addition, there is also a nod to the adobe towers of Africa. The building also looks very much like a labyrinth that is often seen in the kasbah in Africa. These usually consist of narrow passages, high walls, which in fact amounts to a real maze. This residential complex houses around 50 apartments. Due to the clever system of corridors, there are various interconnected courtyards. On the terraces there is a swimming pool, sauna and solariums that are exclusively accessible to the residents.
Bofill’s latest creation in Calpe
You almost feel like you’re in Greece when you see his 3rd creation, the Amphitheatre. The complex consists of 27 apartments and there is a communal swimming pool and solarium. In an amphitheatre, the stage is in the middle where the spectators look out. In this case, the swimming pool is the stage and the spectators are the facades of the various apartments. A true work of art and a picture to behold.

This architect was born on December 5, 1939 in Barcelona. He was honored with the Barcelona City Prize in 1980 for transforming an old cement factory in Barcelona into his headquarters. He died in Barcelona on January 14, 2022.
