On the way to Valencia
Well, after discussing all the details, we got in the car and drove to Valencia. From Moraira it is just over 1 hour away. In consultation with Eline we drove directly to Plaza la Reina. This square is located in the centre of Valencia and is quite easy to reach from the highway. A large parking garage has been built under the square, which charges reasonable prices. We were in the garage from 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. for another 15 euros. Compare that with cities such as Amsterdam and London! Oh … and talking about Amsterdam. In terms of population, Valencia is comparable to Amsterdam.
Start of the bicycle tour
After we parked the car we went to Eline. As was agreed, she was waiting for us at the cathedral. From the cathedral it was a 5 minute walk to the bike rental company where Eline prefers to get her bikes. And to be honest … they are great bikes. The brakes work (comes in quite handy at times…), there are gears (is not always that way) and also the saddle gave some comfort (that is certainly not always the case).
Bicycle touring
After Eline had indicated on the map of Valencia where we were and how we were about to cycle, it was time to start the tour. The first sight was the ¨Gate of Valencia¨. We listened to all of the stories she could tell about it. After a short drive through the city we were already looking at the old city gate of Valencia. Eline could tell plainly about that … but I’m not going to tell everything. Then we went deeper into the core of the city where we visited the cathedral, trading house, covered market, court and ceramics museum. After seeing the highlights in the old centre and having a delicious cup of coffee on one of the many terraces in the centre, we went on. We left for the canal that had been drained and dried, which in the meantime has been transformed into a 9 kilometre (!) Long city park.
A park of 9 kilometres
The canal has traditionally been right through the city of Valencia and now serves as a city park and to be honest a quite impressive one. You should definitely see this, when in Valencia. The park has something for everyone. A real zoo, sea aquarium, opera, playground, fountains, waters, etc. etc. Eline, was very enthusiastic and did not stop talking about the history of the canal, the current function and of course Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències. This is the area at the end of the canal (near the sea) where architect Santiago Calatrava has designed ultramodern buildings that are even more impressive with Eline’s explanation.
After finally seeing half the park by bike, Eline brought us back to the old centre of Valencia. There she had reserved a table in perhaps the best tapas restaurant in Valencia. The warm welcome made us suspect that Eline was no stranger here, so it prompted us to ask which tapas she could recommend. After Eline had labelled the whole menu as delicious, she took off. During the tapas lunch we could look back on a super fun, relaxed bike tour through Valencia. We are convinced that we have not seen everything during the 3-hour tour, but have seen and heard a lot.
We can heartily recommend a bike tour through Valencia. Eline makes it a real party. No standard tunes, but really nice stories that you like to listen to.
