Things to see in Altea on the Costa Blanca

The coastal town of Altea is located south of Moraira, less than half an hour’s drive from your holiday home. From Moraira there are two roads that lead to Altea, namely the coastal road along Calpe, the other option is via the A7 motorway. The coastal road is shorter in terms of kilometers, but the highway is faster in terms of time. Are you going for views or for the comfortable highway?

Once you are in Altea you again have two choices. Are you going for the boulevard of Altea or to the old idyllic city center. The old town is not directly on the coast, but is against the mountain with the Nuestra Señora del Consuelo church in the middle. The church with its blue domes overlooks the whole city and can be seen from afar.

Church of Altea

Those who want to visit the old town will have to drive up through fairly narrow streets and see if parking is possible there. And as is known, Spaniards can park very tight, but are not surprised by a scratch more or less on the car. For that reason it is wise to park on the edges of the city center in one of the parking garages. You can then walk to the core of the old town where you can enjoy the beautiful square at the Nuestra Señora del Consuelo church and the impressive view of Altea and the Mediterranean Sea.

La plaza in Altea

The square in front of the church (La Plaza) is a great place to be both during the day and in the evening. Small vistas let you enjoy the blue sea and/or the characteristic white houses of the old town. The terraces here are full almost every evening. A number of art galleries present complete the picture.

The many narrow streets and alleys date back to the time when the Moors were in power here. A walk on the pebbled paths and steps is definitely worth it. The authentic street lighting creates a very atmospheric image in the evening.

Those who really want to enjoy the authentic Spain would do well to explore Moraira and also drive south to visit Altea. From your holiday home or holiday apartment of Moraira Holiday Homes, Altea is within easy reach and highly recommended.

The white village

Altea is also known as pueblo blanco or white village. Especially in the old center it is immediately clear where Altea owes this name. All houses here are white. The central point is the large church, which is more terracotta in color instead of white. The narrow streets of the old village with nice vistas to the Mediterranean Sea make it idyllic and photogenic. And you can see that on the most social. I think Altea is one of the most photographed villages on the Costa Blanca.

Boulevard of Altea

Coastal town of Altea has a fairly large harbor that has a good view from the higher old village center. The marina is bustling with activity. In addition to a decent parking space, you can take a nice walk from the harbor on the kilometers long boulevard of Altea. It is a beautifully landscaped boulevard with the Mediterranean Sea on one side and many terraces on the other.

Visit a brewery

We know a number of Spanish beer brands, such as San Miquel and Mahou. But do you also know Althaia beers? Probably not. This small brewery is located in Altea and gives guided tours of the brewery with great love for the product.

Shopping in Altea

More and more shops are popping up in Altea. From small bouetiques to very nice interior shops. In the main shopping street there are no free shops and the street is often closed to traffic, creating a free, wide pedestrian promenade. But wide sidewalks have been made along the busy N-332, so that the shops there are also easily accessible. Where the boulevard as the Mediterranean Sea mainly has catering establishments, there are mainly many shops on the 2nd and 3rd line. That way you can combine both well.
